The Qantas A380 is configured with 450 seats in four cabins - 14 in First Class, 72 in Business Blass, 32 in the Premium Economy cabin and 332 in Economy Class.

Features include:
- 14 single private suites in First Class featuring a 17 inch LCD wide screen video monitor, a unique touch screen control unit, and a seat (manufactured by B/E Aerospaces’s VIP jet group) that swivels into a comfortable armchair and a fully flat, extra long and wide bed;

- the next generation of Qantas’ award-winning sleeper seat Skybed in Business Class, which now offers an extra long and fully flat bed with ergonomically enhanced cushioning, a larger in-arm entertainment screen, additional storage options and more privacy;

- a private lounge area in the upper deck Business Class cabin featuring leather sofas, a self-service bar, large video monitor with laptop connectivity and a feature display cabinet;

- Premium Economy seats by Recaro, with fully adjustable, in-arm, digital wide screen television monitors, and a self service bar dedicated to the upper deck Premium Economy cabin;

- Recaro seats in Economy Class featuring a sliding base that moves with the seat back to create a more comfortable, ergonomically tested position to aid sleep and eliminate pressure points and a foot net to stop sliding during sleep;

- four self-service bars in Economy Class;

- state-of-the-art Panasonic inflight entertainment system with more than 100 on demand movies, 350 television selections, 500 audio CDs, 30 PC style games, and a selection of audio books, language tutorials, destination information, business education and radio channels; and

- in-seat laptop power and connectivity in every class allowing passengers to send and receive emails directly from their personal webmail and hotmail accounts via laptop or seat monitor.

The first Qantas A380, named after Australian pioneer aviatrix Nancy-Bird Walton, aged 92, departed Toulouse at 23:55 and operate via Singapore to touched down in Sydney at 09:00 on Sunday, 21st September.

Were it is flying?
The Qantas A380 will undergo a series of pre-entry into service, training and promotional activities ahead of its first commercial passenger service, operating from Melbourne to Los Angeles on 20 October 2008. The first service from Sydney - also to Los Angeles - will operate on 24 October.

Qantas A380 services between Sydney and London via Singapore will commence in January 2009.

Qantas will take delivery of three A380s by the end of 2008, with eight by the end of 2009 and all 20 by the end of 2013.

Romanian low-cost carrier BlueAir is introducing a 7 euro fee for each checked in bag, starting with October 26th. The carrier is not limiting the number of bags that a passenger can check-in but the tax will be paid for each bag.

In the same time the carrier is lowering the luggage allowance to 20kg, from 25kg. For each extra kilogram the passenger has to pay 6 euro more. For the moment the passenger can’t pay for the luggage on the internet at the time of the booking, so the tax will be paid at the departure airport, before the check-in.

As the passenger is not yet able to pay at the time of booking BlueAir can front some delays because of the “pay at the airport” process.

Czech Airlines (CSA) , the biggest national airline of Czech Republic, is also lowering the luggage allowance for all the passengers traveling in Economy Class, from 23kg to 20kg. The new rule is effective from October 26th.

The new allowances affect also the passengers flying to/from intercontinental flights - United States and Canada - hat have to carry maximum two pieces of luggage of 20kg.

The Business Class passengers can still fly with 30kg of checked luggage in Europe and Middle East and 32kg for flights to/from United States and Canada.

Today, the Belgian and Irish governments announced that they plan to introduce from the early months of 2009 a new tax for all the airlines operating to/from Belgium and Ireland.

The new tax called “Collective madness” will be paid by each carrier taking off from any airport in the two mentioned countries, no matter it is a local or a foreign airline. The tax will be paid for each passenger carried on board of the aircraft.

In Ireland there the tax will be introduced starting with 30th March for each passenger that is outbound for another European country. The tax will be 8 euro for a passenger flying to one of the countries very close to Ireland - UK, Iceland, France, Spain and Germany, and 10 euro if he/she is flying to another European destination and the north African countries. For the moment the government have not mentioned if there will be a tax for the intercontinental flights (other than those to north Africa).

The press is expecting a very vehement reaction from low-cost airline Ryanair which is flying from all Irish airports to more than 90 European destinations. In the same time, Ryanair has a base at Bruxelles Charleroi Airport (the secont Bruxelles airport) from were is flying to almost 30 European and north African destinations.

In Belgium, the tax can be even higher, and if so it is expected that airlines will cut flights from the four main airports: Bruxelles International, Charleroi, Antwerp and Liege. For the moment, the government did not said how much this tax will be.

A French newspaper said (noting that there is not an official source to be quoted) that the new Belgian tax will be 10 euro for any European outbound flight and 40 euro for all the others.

A person working in the Belgian aviation sector told Boardingmedia.net that he hopes taxes will not be like those imposed last spring by the Dutch government: 11,25 euro per any passenger on an outgoing flight to any European destination and 45 euro for anybody flying to any worldwide airport.

The Belgian tax concern a lot the Dutch travelers too as many of the are using the Bruxelles International airport to fly intercontinental flights and Charleroi to reach European popular destination, as they do not want to pay the high Dutch taxes impose to airlines flying out Amsterdam or Rotterdam airports.

IATA (International Air Transport Association) criticized the Irish and Belgian proposals for the new tax, “Collective madness is the only way to describe the EUR 150 million Irish and EUR 132 million Belgian departure tax proposals. Filling budget gaps or financing government investment in the banking industry with gratuitous travel taxes is policy myopia at its worst,” told Giovanni Bisignani, IATA’s Director General and CEO, quoted by Associated Press.

Compania elvetiana Baboo zboara incepand cu 27 octombrie, de patru ori pe saptamana de la Bucuresti la Geneva, in zilele de luni, miercuri, vineri si duminica. In aceleasi zile compania ofera posibilitatea romanilor care vor sa ajunga pe riviera franceza sa zboare catre Nisa, via Geneva.

It’s up in the air and it is still flying and … will keep on operating. It’s so good to be right sometimes! I was right when I had said that this company would not get busted because there could have been too many bad things to come after the “dead” of this airline-company.

And the Alitalia workers knew it too. So they played until the very end was very close. In this way they the change to get as much as possible out of the new investors, and to be able to get better contracts and less job cuts. It was risky, it could have been tricky … but in the end this is the way that country is going: up to the limit. When that limit is reached they are trying to find a solution. Most of the time they are finding it.

Anyway… I salute the new CAI (Compagnia Aerea Italiana) with a new banner on this blog, with an Alitalia ticket to Napoli (via Malpensa, and back via Rome) for next week… and with a “pax” of Prigat/Cappy that mr. Popa (a coleague) has to “pay” in December! Why at that time? Because we made a bet: I said the company will not colapse till December, he said it will!

The short story with what is going on about Alitalia:
- the four leading trade unions - CGIL, CISL, UIL and UGL - agreed with a new contract on Wednesday
- the pilots union agreed on Friday night with the new contracts, were the commandants will get the status of “managers”; they also agreed on less job cuts.
- on Saturday the cabin staff is still negotiating, with discussions set to be finished till Monday at noon.

What are the plans in the near future:
- if all agreements are established till Wednesday, Thursday the company will be split in two: the good part (civil flights operations - including slots, ticketing/handling/Atitech) and the bad part (cargo operations and some other assets of the company).
- there will be the fusion of Alitalia and Airone (the segond biggest operator in Italy) under the name of CAI, but it seems the company will use the Alitalia name and logo.
- the new company will operate under the temporary flight license till October 15th.
- there is also some interest showed by Lufthansa and Air France, that want to participate with 10 - 15 % each in the new company.

The most difficult part:
- getting a new flight license from Italian aeronautical authority - ENAC - till October 15th. (But this thing will get fixed in the Italian way :-) ).

George was writing that Alitalia had some flights suspended this week between Romania and Italy. He is also telling a very hard to believe story: that the company was paying the handling agent cash for the services. This is very hard to believe that a company will let so much cash to the captain, pilots or crew members to pay for handling, food and re-fuel of the aircraft. There are contracts that the airlines are signing with the handling firms… and they choose some services and they pay for those services through bank transfers once in a while. If the company do not have money to pay at a certain point there can be negotiations for paying the services in rates or once at all but at a later date.

George was also saying that there were six extra crew members that should have remained in Bucharest till next Monday (this was happening Thursday). No airline in the world (especially one that has problems with the cash) will pay four nights in a four star hotel for their crew members.

So those six crew members were for the plane that will have arrived at midnight, and was supposed to live in the morning. The crew arriving at midnight would leave next day on another flight, after spending a night resting. With the company decided to cancel the evening flight, and the midnight flight (and also the morning flight) it was normal that the extra crew to fly back to Italy. What is not clear… is why they left with the plane empty.

O poveste… cu o companie falimentara
In noaptea de joi spre vineri, ma suna un prieten… cu o voce disperata. Eu balmajesc ca m-a trezit din somn, el vorbea pe “fast forward”. L-am lasat sa termine si l-am rugat frumos sa mai spuna o data ce-mi spuse anterior, dar de data asta sa vorbeasca mai calm si mai rar ca sa inteleg si eu ceva. Zborul lui de la Londra la Toronto fusese anulat, dupa ce timp de mai multe ori in timpul zilei compania anuntase mai multe reprogramari ale cursei in cauza… anuland-o pana la urma. I-am explicat ca trebuie sa mearga la ghiseul companiei si sa solicite cazare la hotel si voucher pentru cina, precum si reprogramarea in urmatorul zbor.

El: Cristi, au anulat toate zborurile. Toate… Si pe alea de maine, si pe cele de poimaine… Si pe alea de anul viitor.
Eu: Adica au dat faliment?
El: Ne-au spus ca nu mai pot zbura si cam atat. Ne-au spus sa ne facem aranjamente cu alte companii si sa mergem la ei pe site sa citim ce facem sa luam banii inapoi.
Eu: Deci da, e faliment.

Situatia era intr-adevar disperata, iar prietenul meu trebuia sa aiba un loc intr-un prim zbor, in ziua urmatoare. Mi-a spus ca daca si-ar fi sunat sefii, probabil i-ar fi platit compania pentru care lucreaza, biletul de avion, dar nu a vrut sa faca asta pentru ca nu i se parea corect (evident, mai corect era sa ma trezeasca pe mine! :-) ). I-am zis sa-mi dea un ragaz de cateva minute pentru a verifica starea zborurilor si ca-l voi suna eu inapoi, sfatuindu-l sa mearga la un hotel din aeroport si sa-si ia o camera. Din nou, omul s-a enervat… ca sa-i plateasca compania camera, iar eu i-am spus calm sa si-o plateasca singur pentru ca de la companie nu mai vede nici un sfant si ca ar trebui sa se obisnuiasca cu ideea.

In cele din urma am reusit sa-i dau de cap problemei prietenului meu: i-am facut o rezervare la British Airways pentru a doua zi, pentru Londra - Toronto, urmand sa achite el contravaloarea biletului la un ghiseul BA din aeroport. Pretul a fost redus cu 50% fata de tariful normal pentru zborul in cauza.
L-am instintat ca trebuie sa-si contacteze compania emitenta a cartii de credit (din Canada), lucru pe care l-a facut a doua zi de dimineata. Compania, care stia despre ce este vorba, i-a spus ce documente trebuie sa trimita prin e-mail si ca-si va recupera banii de pe zborul anulat in maxim 15 zile.

Una dupa alta
In povestea de mai sus este vorba de compania Zoom Airlines, o companie ale carei baze au fost puse de doi britanici prin anul 2000 si care a inceput sa opereze in anul 2001 zboruri in regim “low-cost” din Canada spre Marea Britanie si Franta, dar opera si cateva curse intre Marea Britanie si Statele Unite. Prin regim low-cost se intelege ca operau curse la preturi sub cele practicate de companiile de linie traditionale, aplicand o serie de taxe pentru servicii aditionale si avand in acelasi timp un sistem diferit de folosire a avioanelor (aceasi aeronava opereaza mai multe zboruri decat o aeronava a unei companii traditionale) lucru care permite companiei sa practice preturi mai mici. Pe 28 august un avion al companiei a fost retinut la sol, la Glasgow, pentru ca Zoom Airlines avea datorii catre firma ce gestioneaza controlul de trafic aerian. In acelasi timp, un alt avion aflat la Toronto astepta sa fie imbarcat pentru a zbura api catre Londra. Insa compania care asigura combustibilul a refuzat umplerea rezervoarelor pana ce patronii Zoom nu-si achita toate datoriile, integral. In nici o ora site-ul companiei a fost suspendat, iar toti angajatii au primit ordin de a intrerupe orice activitate. In acel moment compania s-a declarat falimentara.

Zoom Airlines nu este prima companie care a avut probleme financiare si care s-a vazut nevoita sa-si inchida imediat toate operatiunile. Iata mai jos lista companiilor care au “decedat” anul acesta:
- 31 Martie: Aloha Airlines (principala companie aeriana din insula Hawaii)
- 3 aprilie 2008: ATA Airlines (companie americana care si-a inceput operatiunile in 1973. Compania opera peste 50 de curse pe zi, intre Statele Unite, Hawaii, Mexic si mai multe destinatii din America de Sud)
- 7 aprilie 2008: Skybus Airlines (una dintre noile companii low-cost din Statele Unite, cu o retea ce deservea peste 30 de orase si care isi lansase operatiunile doar cu un an in urma)
- 9 aprilie 2008: Oasis (companie din Hong Kong care efectua zboruri intre acest oras si Londra)
- 26 aprilie 2008: EOS Airlines (companie americana, care opera zboruri cu avioane configurate numai Business Class; opera un numar de doua, pana la patru zboruri zilnice intre New York si Londra; anul acesta ar fi trebuit sa deschida ruta Londra - Dubai si New York - Paris, precum si un zbor intre Londra si Georgetown, in Guyana)
- 13 iunie 2008: Silverjet (companie britanica, tot “only-business” care opera zboruri intre Londra Luton si Dubai si Newark)

Scopul listei de mai sus este de a demonstra ca orice companie aeriana, indiferent de profil - low cost sau traditionala -, indiferent de publicul tinta - cei care vor sa cheltuiasca putin pe zboruri sau pasagerii de business care vor plati si 2.000 de euro pe un singur bilet -, si indiferent de tara de unde se afla… pot ajunge usor la faliment. Industria aeronautica presupune multe cheltuieli, iar faptul ca pretul petrolului a crescut foarte mult in ultimele luni nu este singurul lucru care influenteaza profitul companiilor aeriene. Daca o companie nu va reusi sa-si administreze foarte bine banii, poate ajunge foarte usor in situatia in care, creditorii sa refuze a mai efectua anumite servicii, iar singurul lucru care ramane este ca respectiva companie aeriana sa fie declarata falita.

Ce se intampla daca o companie aeriana declara falimentul?
Este destul de greu de explicat acest lucru, dat fiind ca exista foarte multe actiuni care vor trebui realizate dupa declararea falimentului. Nu intru aici in partea administrativa, ci voi pune accentul pe situatia in care se afla pasagerul.

Cateva lucruri de stiut, inca de la bun inceput sunt:
- companiile aerine foarte mari, de linie sau low-cost (Easyjet, Ryanair), pot ajunge la faliment doar in cazuri exceptionale si de acceea sunt considerate de experti ca fiind mai sigure. O companie cu o flota de peste 100 de avioane si cu o retea de zboruri foarte intinsa, gaseste mereu modul de a egala balanta dintre cheltuieli si venituri. Cel mai bun exemplu in acest caz sunt chiar low-cost-urile Ryanair si Easyjet, care raporteaza profituri semnificative in fiecare an. Faptul ca cifrele declarate pentru acest an sunt mai mici, deci compania nu a fost la fel de profitabila ca anul trecut, se datoreaza numai pretului petrolului.
- in cele mai multe cazuri, incetarea operatiunilor unei companii aeriene se face fara un “preaviz”
- pasagerii pot fi informati chiar si dupa check-in ca operatiunile companiei lor au fost definitiv suspendate
- in cazul falimentului, daca sunteti deja in aeroport, nici o companie aeriana nu va va asigura cazare la hotel si masa pe toata perioada de pana la zborul dvs. (care evident va fi cu o alta companie)
- companiile nu sunt obligate sa va puna la dispozitie un bilet gratuit, cu o alta companie.
- companiile nu vor putea efectua un refund al pretului biletelor neutilizate, deci va trebui sa discutati direct cu banca dvs. pentru a primi inapoi banii.

Ce NU TREBUIE sa faceti in cazul in care aflati ca nu veti mai putea zbura cu o companie declarat proaspat falimentara:

A. daca sunteti la aeroport si va pregateati de check-in/imbarcare:
- NU trebuie sa va panicati
- NU trebuie sa tipati la personalul de la sol (de la ghiseul companiei, de la ghiseul de check-in sau de la poartea de imbarcare). Amintiti-va ca acestia tocmai au ramas fara serviciu si ganditi-va ca oricum ei nu au nici o vina.
- NU trebuie sa va duceti glont la prima companie aeriana care va iese in cale si sa cereti un nou bilet, pe care sa-l achitati imediat, fara sa va informati daca exista companii dispuse sa ofere un pret mai mic pasagerilor afectati de anularea zborului dvs.

B. daca sunteti acasa si mai aveti intre o zi si un an pana la data de zbor:
- NU trebuie sa incercati sa contactati compania aeriana. aceasta si-a suspendat toate activitatile, inclusiv serviciul de call center.
- NU trebuie sa dati fuga pe internet sa procurati alt bilet, indiferent de pretul acestuia… pentru ca vreti sa calatoriti oricum, fara sa va informati daca exista companii dispuse sa ofere un pret mai mic pasagerilor afectati de anularea zborului dvs.


Ce TREBUIE sa faceti:

A. daca sunteti in aeroport si va pregateati de check-in/imbarcare:
- incercati sa aflati de la personalul companiei care sunt conditiile prin care puteti sa va efectuati totusi calatoria. De regula, mai multe companii aerine ofera locuri la preturi speciale pentru calatorii aflati in astfel de situatii. Zborurile pot fi operate de companie catre orasul dvs. de destinatie sau catre unul mai apropiat. In cazul in care sunteti la jumatatea calatoriei, cand s-a intamplat nefericitul faliment, companiile in cauza vor avea preturi speciale pentru biletele one-way (de regula mult mai scumpe decat unul achizitionat dus-intors).
- daca sunteti la inceputul itinerariului (compus dintr-un zbor dus-intors) veti putea beneficia de tarife speciale si in acest caz.
- petreceti cateva ore in aeroport, incercand sa acumulati cat mai multe informatii despre posibilitatea cumpararii unui nou bilet de la o alta companie si despre cum ati putea sa va recuperati banii cheltuiti pe biletele care nu vor mai fi utilizate.
- daca reusiti sa va luati un bilet pentru a doua zi, mergeti la cel mai apropiat hotel.

B. daca sunteti acasa si mai aveti intre o zi si un an pana la data de zbor:
- accesati site-ul companiei aeriene in cauza pentru a afla ce ar trebui sa faceti. vizitati site-ul de mai multe ori, la intervaluri regulate de timp, deoarce companiile vor introduce noi date despre recuperarea banilor si preturi “speciale” oferite de alte companii aeriene.
- contactati-va banca emitenta a cardului si anuntati ca zborul dvs. a fost anulat definitiv, iar compania nu poate face refund. Banca ar trebui sa va lase sa anulati tranzactia, daca este vorba de un card de credit. (o sa completez cu informatii…. dupa ce voi discuta la bancile din Romania, sa vedem ce se poate face intr-o astfel de situatie).
- aflati care sunt companiile ce zboara pe ruta pe care ar fi trebui sa zburati dvs. si incercati sa vedeti daca respectiva companie va poate oferi un pret “special”.
- daca mai aveti cel putin 4 luni pana la inceperea itinerariului dvs. cautati pur si simplu o alta alternativa de zbor, pretruile fiind accesibile cu un asa mare avans.


Protejeaza-te singur!
Compania aeriana iti vinde un serviciu, dar daca lucrurile nu merg bine pentru ei, vor merge prost si pentru tine. Asa ca trebuie sa iei in considerare urmatoarele lucruri:
- e mai bine sa-ti cumperi singur biletul, direct de pe site-ul companiei aeriene sau de pe un site care se foloseste de sistemele de rezervari Amadeus, Galileo sau Worldspan (folosite de marea majoritatea a companiilor de linie).
- plateste cu cartea de credit. In cazul in care, in maxim 180 de zile de la data platii, compania aeriana da faliment faci o cerere la banca emitenta a cardului si aceasta ar trebui sa faca refund integral pentru suma achitata. Daca ai platit cu un card de debit, atunci regula tocmai mentionata nu se aplica. In majoritatea din cazuri, platile cash nu vor fi niciodata recuperate.
- mai bine nu cumperi de la agentiile de turism. In cazul in care o companie da faliment agentia de turism de la care ai cumparat biletul nu are posibilitatea de ati restitui banii, in conditiile in care acei bani au fost expediati ulterior platii tale in contul companiei aeriene.
- despre asigurarile de calatorie (care nu-s acelasi lucru cu asigurarile medicale de calatorie!) voi scrie in curand.

There are two “the best friends” in my life… a she and a he. For the moment we leave the guy apart as there is a short time till we will surf the Napoli bays together. Let’s talk about “the she”.
She was sleeping in the same bed with me years ago. We were sharing the same cup of coffee in the mornings. We were taking the dog out in the morning, at noon and in the evening. We were spending most of our weekend together… It was in the high school. Then I went at the university in Bucharest and there was one weekend every two weeks i “was flying back” to see my parents and her. No, we were not in love… or at least not that kind of love. And of course I had to listen to all those bullshits… I’ll never get married, nobody wants me… my mother does not like that one or the other one (yes, yes … she has a very complicated mother). An now… here she is getting fat married, with a funny guy… that I don’t really like so much (Hello Dragos! :-) ). Just kidding. They will be a perfect couple when he will really loose some weight, and when she will stop getting fat… :-)

So, I’m preparing for the big night and for a “cool” weekend in my home town.

And NO, there will be no “Just married” car-message.

Sper din tot sufletul ca filmului lui Cristian Mungiu - 4 luni, 3 saptamani si doua zile, sa ia Globul de Aur pentru cel mai bun film strain. rezultatele … duminica, 13 ian.
